What is The House Archives Built about?

The House Archives Built and Other Thoughts on Black Archival Possibilities is a collection of new essays and reworked talks focusing on the past, present, and future of Black archives. Written by an award winning archivist, essays in the book offer a rare combination of practical experience and experimental theorizations on the institutionalization of memory.

Who is the audience for The House Archives Built?

This book is intended for archivists, writers, memory workers, artists, musicians, students- anyone whose work or life is influenced by the memorialization of Black life. Essays from the book have been assigned in college courses ranging from studio art to archival studies, to historic preservation.

Where can I get a copy? I heard they were sold out!

You can order right here!
The House Archives Built
is the first publication of a very small, woman-of-color-led press. The first two editions had very limited runs as we were not sure if there would be any interest! We have been grateful to sell both out within days and have printed larger quantities to avoid future gaps.

Where’s my order? I’m used to a two-day delivery!

While we are expanding to independent bookstores, we are not Amazon (and we don’t sell on Amazon!). Fulfillment and shipping is handled by a single woman. Please give us grace as we work to meet demand as quickly as possible.

Can I make a bulk order for my library, class, or shop?

Absolutely! Reach out to press@weherespace[dot]org to order directly from the press with a bulk order discount for large orders.

Will you come to my school/archive/gallery/wherever?

If I can fit it into my schedule! Reach out to dorothyjudithberry@gmail[dot]com.

The House Archives Built is a labor of love written off-hours from my full-time job in the cultural heritage space. I’m happy to discuss possibilities for engagements with travel/accommodations provided for invitations outside of the Washington, D.C. area. Honorarium is up for discussion!

Will you Zoom into my class?

I’d sure like to try! Reach out to dorothyjudithberry@gmail[dot]com
